ENDANGERED SPECIES COLLECTION

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 is intended to provide a means to conserve the ecosystems upon which endangered and threatened species depend and provide programs for the conservation of those species, thus preventing extinction of plants and animals.

The Elgin Public Museum opened in 1920 as the Elgin Audubon Museum and as such, birds occupy a prominent place in the collection. Specimens of California Condor, Bald Eagle, Greater Prairie Chicken and many other extinct and endangered species are displayed on the 2nd floor. We also have a specimen of the extinct Passenger Pigeon, the bird that numbered in the billions in the early 19th century and was wiped out by the end of that century.
